Last Saturday I made a story for De Telegraaf about the illustrious showers in the Stade de Vélodrome de Roubaix. The older riders, like Roy Curvers and Koen de Kort, told me that it became more and more difficult to get young riders in the dilapidated laundry room where there are 85 changing rooms and 30 showers and where since 1943 almost all the big champions washed the dust and mud of Hell from their tired body. The nostalgia of a new generation is less and less alive. Patrick Lefevere told me that last year Philippe Gilbert was one of the few in his team who absolutely wanted to go to the showers. In his album he wanted a picture of himself after Paris-Roubaix in those showers. As so many great champions have been recorded there. Yesterday, after his victory, I was convinced that he would visit the showers again. More than 2,5 hours after his victory my waiting was rewarded. With two French photographers and the photographer of the team we were let in and we were allowed to immortalize Gilbert while he let the invigorating water run over him and he had a bottle of shampoo standing next to him. It was an intimate moment with one of the best cyclists of this generation. Maybe the best one-day rider. Especially in view of the diversity in his list of honours. He has already won four monuments and since Sean Kelly in 1989 no one has succeeded in doing so again. When I left to start my story in time I said: 'Merci Phillippe'. Gilbert nodded, smiled and replied: See you next week in the Amstel. He knows exactly where I was born and raised and knows how to cherish South Limburg in my heart. The fat wink on leaving said enough. The Cauberg is like a red carpet ready for this 'cobblestone man'. They’re also only the start of the #PinkArgyle Paris-Roubaix story. . Here’s another layer to it . Sep Vanmarcke gave tearful after tearful interview from inside the Roubaix Velodrome. He spoke about his disappointment candidly: “After all what happened the last weeks, I had to fight very hard to come back, even when I couldn’t train. Last week I did everything I could with a bad knee to still train and get the best level possible and today I knew if I did everything perfect, I could still be close to victory. . “And today I did everything perfect. I didn’t make one mistake. But then on the Carrefour de l‘Arbre, my derailleur stopped working*. I went into the 11 and I couldn’t do anything anymore.
